If you are reading my material and considering gaining insights for my advice then it’s probably a good idea to get a bit of an understanding of who I am and what things have influenced my life so far.
I didn’t come from a well to do family or even a family involved in business. My Dad was an engineer in the government and my Mum worked as an administrator. What I did learn growing up was the lessons or self reliance, the benefits of hard work and not to expect that life would be fair. I was born in country Queensland, Australia and move to the city of Brisbane as a young boy. I wasn’t particularly interested in school but managed to leave with “okay” results but no immediate idea of my future direction. |
I got involved in business in a less that usual pathway. I don’t have a business degree and I didn’t work for one of the big business consulting houses. These are facts that I actually see as an advantage because I’m not shackled by “traditional” business thinking and frameworks. My road to business started in an unusual place, around 15 years in the Australian Army.
I didn’t realise it at the time but I was learning many lessons as an Army Officer that would prepare me for life in business. It was not unusual to work 18 or 20 hours every day, maintaining absolute focus on the mission and making sure nothing was allowed to divert attention from the “main game’.
This experience also taught me the absolute importance of process and discipline, a methodical approach and self-responsibility. I have worked in countries around the world including Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Iraq.

I have worked with large organisations like Linfox, Ceva Logistics and Microsoft as well as many small companies whose owners are deeply immersed in the day to day running of their business. I have also been engaged by quite a few government organisations to provide advice on interacting with commercial firms.
Typical of the projects I completed was the creation from scratch of the Microsoft distribution centre in Sydney, long term organisational development and bottom line improvement of an electrical equipment supplier and ongoing mentoring of a successful high end residential building company. |
More lately my focus has moved to working with entrepreneurs to move from start up through the early stages of the business and then through what I call the “messy” stage of business, when a business has around 10 to 15 staff and are moving from the simple business operating model to something that required more structure and organisation.
My business mentoring approach is based on working one to one with people who are motivated to achieve their business success to provide them with the necessary skills, tools, resources and motivation. I draw on around 30 years of experience working across the diverse range of businesses and government agencies to provide insights and resources to help my clients move towards their goals, which as often as not help to develop and clarify. I strongly encourage my clients to have a very clear and easily communicated mission or vision. Mine is to work with committed business owners and managers to help them to decide and achieve their goals. My interest in business coaching and mentoring comes from a desire to pass on the things I have learned over the last three decades and help committed people achieve their business success. |
Outside of work, I spend time on my farm, a working olive grove and enjoy the company of my kids and grandkids who are full of energy and certainly keep me on my toes. Over the last few years I have realised a life long ambition and have gained my recreational pilots licence and currently I’m working towards my full private licence. It’s interesting that I am learning many lessons as a pilot that are relevant to life in business. I’d like to share some of these experience and lessons with you some time.
